Mancunian Man: The Legendary Life of Cliff Twemlow

Bouncer. Novelist. Composer. Screenwriter. Producer. Star. To ‘80s UK audiences, Cliff Twemlow was all of these and then some. Twemlow gathered a devoted team of local doormen, martial artists, variety performers, club DJs, models, girlfriends, gym friends, family members and B-listers to create his own cut-rate Hollywood empire. For more than a decade, in fact, Twemlow was the UK’s most prolific indie filmmaker. But in Manchester, he was – and remains – a legend.
We love it when an inexperienced maverick rejects all the accepted filmmaking conventions and goes rogue – and Cliff Twemlow certainly earned his legendary status. This genuinely warm documentary is crammed with incredible stories from broken mechanical fish, winning a spot on the Video Nasties hit-list, and even getting caught up in an active warzone (and using it to his advantage!). Cliff’s story is one of a passion for filmmaking so strong that nothing – and we really mean nothing – could stop him.
