Abertoir is roaring to life and for its 2024 edition, the festival will feature animals on the attack and mother nature biting back in the classics line-up.

From the tiniest creepy-crawly to over-sized smog-monster, keep reading to discover the first of this year’s line-up announcements!

Saul Bass’ sole directorial credit Phase IV (1974) is a terrifying vision of the limits of science when faced with a superior intelligence. In this case? Ants! Though not universally appreciated on its first release, 50 years later there’s no denying Phase IV’s remarkable sense of dread.

We had so many Jaws rip-offs to choose from, and one of the most famous of those made the cut: William Girdler’s Grizzly (1976), in a brand new 4K restoration. But, if you ask us, this is less furry shark, and more Jason Voorhees…if he was a bear.

What do you get when you cross a British pulp author and a Spanish exploitation master? That’s right – Slugs (1988)! After watching this gory and wildly entertaining film, you’ll never look at those innocent, silvery trails the same again…

In the big G’s 70th year, we’re ecstatic to finally bring this iconic screen monster to Abertoir. Godzilla vs Hedorah (1971), the 11th film of the Godzilla franchise, pits everyone’s favourite giant lizard against an alien sea creature feeding on earth’s pollution.

That’s all for now, but rest assured there’s more to come: an iconic shark will be making an appearance (just not that one…), and of course we’ve got a whole host of brand new films, special events and guests in store.

Abertoir Horror Festival takes place 14–17 November at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, with its online Choice Cuts event running 23-24 November. Festival pass and ticket details will be available soon.
