Join us on October 24 to celebrate Jimmy Sangster, one of the legends of classic British horror. Born in Kinmel Bay and educated in Cardiff, Sangster began his career in film as a 16-year old clapper boy and would go on to be one of the key figures of classic British horror, primarily for his writing work for Hammer Films.

We’ll be celebrating Sangster’s contribution to the genre and to British cinema with two of his films as well as the new documentary, Hammer and Beyond: The Jimmy Sangster Legacy, made by author, researcher and filmmaker Marcus Hearn, who will also be joining us in this very special event.

This is a chance to see Hammer’s brand new and fully uncut 4K restoration of Dracula (Terence Fisher, 1958), written by Sangster. A landmark in Gothic horror, Dracula cemented Hammer Films’ reputation as the leading force in modern horror cinema and introduced audiences worldwide to Christopher Lee’s definitive interpretation of Bram Stoker’s immortal vampire. Opposite Peter Cushing’s fearless Van Helsing, Lee brought a terrifying physicality and seductive menace to the role that would redefine the Count for generations.

Sangster would only direct three films during his career, the finest of which is Fear in the Night (1972), a twisted thriller with a starry cast: Judy Geeson as the terrified newly-wed, Ralph Bates as her teacher husband, Peter Cushing as a menacing school-master, and Joan Collins as his elusive wife.

Sandwiched between the films we’re so pleased that Hammer expert Marcus Hearn will join us to present his documentary, Hammer and Beyond: The Jimmy Sangster Legacy, charting the career of one of British horror’s greats. Marcus be with us and will take us a little deeper into Sangster’s story, digging into his time spent with him through many interviews over the years, as well as having time for questions about the film.
