Less than a month to go ‘til this year’s Abertoir and while our schedule’s almost ready, we wanted to unveil a few more titles from this year’s programme – including 4 UK premieres!
Ming Jin Woo’s Indera is a classic tale of isolation, fear and regret, where a father and his young daughter face an increasing threat while staying in a remote, rural home. Set in 1985, during a time of unrest in Malaysia, Indera offers up an eerie and tense experience.
Kaneihtiio Horn is director, writer and star of the wonderful Seeds, in which an influencer returns to the rez to discover she’s partnered with the wrong corporation, and now faces a battle for her people’s legacy. An indigenous home invasion film – that boasts Home Alone as an influence! – this charming film also features great practical FX and a powerful message about how we honour our ancestors.
In The Island Between Tides a young woman is drawn to a mysterious island, only to return a few hours later to discover the rest of the world has moved on 25 years. Directed by long-time collaborators Austin Andrews and Andrew Holmes, the film’s gorgeous cinematography will lure you in just like the mysterious island of the title.
Zac Locke, producer of The Wind and former member of the Blumhouse team, brings us his new film Decibel. A young musician accepts the offer of a lifetime, only to find herself at the mercy of a tech-obsessed producer. Part-music film and part-techno horror, Decibel is particularly topical exploration of the nature of art.
Another documentary joining our line-up is Children of the Wicker Man, directed by Justin Hardy and Dominic Hardy, sons of The Wicker Man director Robin Hardy, alongside Chris Nunn. They journey through Hardy’s previously lost paper archive, and encounter the complex nature of independent filmmaking and fatherhood.
Those of you who know the story of Abertoir know that The Wicker Man is responsible for the festival starting in the first place, nineteen years ago, and Robin Hardy was our guest twice. Children of the Wicker Man allows us to understand the more personal aspect of the film and Robin himself, shedding remarkable new light on the film for any fan.
There are just a few more films and a few more guests to announce very soon, along with the full festival programme, so please hold on just a little bit longer – Abertoir’s almost here!
