At a rural, run-down art school, a small class of students embarks on their new semester. Soon their dissatisfaction with the quality of teaching is eclipsed by the disappearance of some of their cohort, and strange behaviour by others. Seemingly under the influence of demonic clay, things get even weirder when an art seller appears to explain what’s really going on…
There is a wonderful sense of 90s retro about Vampire Clay, and that’s achieved through dedication to practical effects work, a strange sense of dread and a dreary colour palate. While there’s no escaping the fact that the central premise of the film is very silly – demonic clay monsters murdering art students - the gooey and gross action unfolds with an imaginative sense of the grotesque, and imagery reminiscent of the work of Junji Ito. Vampire Clay is a strange and unique J-Horror throwback.
