Cut and Run: An Introduction to the Slasher Film

A PRESENTATION BY STEVEN JONES

Want to know why so many films depict teens being murdered on national holidays? Ever wondered what would motivate a dentist to kill? Need to figure out why there are so many slasher film porn parodies? This talk will chart the progression of the slasher film from its origins, through its hey-day in the 80s, up to the present. Along the way, we’ll revisit the bad dancing, wild special FX, and bizarre homicides that make the slasher a fan-pleasing staple of horror cinema.

Do Serial Killers Really Exist?

A PRESENTATION BY GAVIN BADDELEY

Tracing back the ancestry of the manical murderer through horror film and fiction, from the mad axemen of macabre cliche, to the franchise slashers of the video era, and the suave homicidal geniuses found in modern TV box sets, we look at how much such - purportedly realistic - monsters were grounded in reality, and whether the antics of flamboyant fictional mass killers have ever inspired actual atrocities. Finally, exploring the twilight zone between fact and fable, we look at how far horror fiction has influenced how we the general public, law enforcement experts - and even the perpetrators themselves…

Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D

OFFSITE SCREENING

We love a bit of fun here at Abertoir, and we racked our heads to come up with a great way to host another offsite screening. We looked at lakes in the middle of forests, we thought about boats, we thought about all night-camping! Then we had a brainwave - one of the most entertaining Friday the 13th instalments is Part 3, a brilliantly exploitative rollercoaster ride of old-school 3D silliness that’s particularly important for being the first film in which Jason Vorhees dons his iconic hockey mask. So where to show this? Believe it or not, we’ve found a…

Regulars know what to expect by now – verbal abuse, free sweets and a truly terrible film!

Pub Quiz

The Abertoir Pub Quiz is a chance to win some fabulous goodies, and to show off your film knowledge! Don’t expect any sense of coherence, but expect plenty of impossible questions, plenty of drinks…and if you’re lucky, plenty of prizes too!

Scala Forever!

A PRESENTATION BY JANE GILES

It's no secret that we love a good exploitation cinema here at Abertoir - in fact we even themed a whole festival around them a few years back when we looked at New York's 42nd Street. But what of more home-grown gems? London was home to our very own jewel in the crown of exploitation exhibition with the Scala, an exceptionally atmospheric repertory cinema with its mysteriously rumbling auditorium and resident cats. People travelled from all over the country to have their minds blown by its alchemical mix of double-bills and all-nighters, specialising in horror, cult movies, kung fu, LGBT+,…

Silent Shorts Vol. IV

Once again, we’ve teamed up with the wonderful silent film pianist Paul Shallcross to mine the seemingly inexhaustible realms of Silent Horror to produce a programme featuring the best of the malevolent and macabre from early cinema. Each of the four films will be accompanied on the piano by Paul whose scores have been specially written for Abertoir. As usual Paul will give illustrated introductions to the films and these will include some of the unintended and amusing happenings which escaped the directorial eye. This will be the first time in the world that Silent Short Vol IV will be…

The Elvis Dead

Rev up the Delta and come on a trip to a cabin in the Tennessee backwoods via Graceland, to witness cult classic horror movie Evil Dead 2 reinterpreted through the songs of Elvis Presley. Every now and then an idea strikes that seems extremely absurd and yet at the same time bizarrely fitting. This loving tribute concert to the sequel to the ultimate in gruelling terror and the King of rock ‘n’ roll is just such an idea!
