Young college student Ken Kaneki (Masataka Kubota) is attacked and wakes in a hospital bed transformed – he is now half-ghoul, requiring human flesh to survive. He meets other ghouls and struggles to adjust to his new life. Just as he thinks he might be finding his place in the world, he finds his very existence is under threat.

Tokyo Ghoul is a wild ride through manga tropes, teen angst and otherworldly action. Ultimately offering a twist on the vampire action film, the ghouls of this alternate Tokyo are elaborate creatures realised impressively on the big screen. The film’s young cast performs with the right level of self-awareness, while veterans such as Yô Ôizumi add a certain sense of fun gravitas to the film’s fast-paced action.
