The film opens in a run-down, abandoned warehouse where a film crew are making a zombie movie – and yet, this is no ordinary warehouse. It’s been said that it’s a site where military experiments once took place…and out of nowhere, real zombies arrive and terrorize the crew!
This may sound clichéd, but One Cut of the Dead is something completely different. Opening with a non-stop 37-minute take, the film then completely shifts gears and turns the zombie genre completely upside down into a charming comedy about the perils of low-budget filmmaking. Opening quietly at a meagre two cinemas, it’s taken Japan by surprise and become a massive cult hit, as one of those films that everyone had to see, catapulting it into the country’s top ten charts!
