India, 19th century: on the outskirts of a decrepit village, Tumbbad lives Vinayak, the stubborn, conniving bastard son of the village lord, obsessed with a mythical ancestral treasure. He suspects the secret lies with his great-grandmother, a cursed witch sleeping for centuries. Confronting her finally puts him face to face with the guardian of the treasure, and what started with a few gold coins quickly becomes a reckless, perpetual obsession that eats away at his very soul.
Tumbbad is a weird and wonderful epic, spanning decades and earthly dimensions with an icky sort of glee – in this film humans haunt the demon, drawn to it by a desire for treasure that overwhelms their desire for safety.
