Set in 1825, Clare (Aisling Franciosi), a young Irish convict woman, chases British officer Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Claflin) through the rugged Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for a terrible act of violence he committed against her family. On the way she enlists the services of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy (Baykali Ganambarr), who is also marked by trauma from his past.

An auspicious follow-up to a critically-acclaimed debut, Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale further cements the director’s reputation for skilled depictions of grief and trauma on screen. A bleak film even at its lightest, The Nightingale depicts a nightmarish vision of humanity, in which violence undermines even the smallest victories.

Please note that The Nightingale contains scenes of sexual violence and scenes some people may find distressing.
