Peter Cushing here takes the role of Dr. Robert Knox, who employs two apparent grave-robbers, Burke and Hare, to obtain bodies for his research. Marking Donald Pleasence’s first role in a horror film, Flesh and the Fiends is an eerie and riveting portrayal of the famously murderous duo. Surprisingly nasty for its time, the film also features a brilliant performance by Billie Whitelaw, while Pleasence eases into the genre with typical aplomb.
