Following directly on from Hammer’s ground-breaking Curse of Frankenstein, Peter Cushing reprises his role as Baron Victor Frankenstein who, after escaping his fate at the end of the last film, travels to Germany under a new identity, to resume his experiments.
This sequel was made just one year after Curse, and shortly after production had wrapped on the equally important Dracula (the fast turnaround was achieved by reusing many of the sets from that film). However, the story, that of the Baron transplanting his assistant’s brain into a new body, doesn’t cut any corners. It takes a different, sophisticated approach to the creature and this time attempts to humanise him.
Now, many critics favourably compare Revenge to Curse as they do Bride of Frankenstein to James Whale’s original – a worthy, intelligent follow-up to an all-time classic.
