A group of aliens in a guitar shaped spaceship are on the hunt to find the true source of rock ’n’ roll. After spotting teenage DeeDee (Pia Zadora) and her boyfriend Frankie (Craig Sheffer), each of whom are vying to become the top rocker in the small town of Speelburgh, the aliens land, only to instigate an increasingly strange series of events and musical mayhem that threatens the very existence of the town itself!
Best described as Rocky Horror made by Troma, Voyage of the Rock Aliens is a nearly unclassifiable smorgasbord made up of one part rock musical, one part sci-fi insanity, and one part 50s kitsch through an 80s glam lens. Horror favourite Michael Berryman gives his most enjoyable performance ever as an escaped chainsaw-wielding lunatic, while Jermaine Jackson (!) lends the film an air of mis-guided musical respectability.
It’s easy to question how a film like this ever got made, but when you find yourself tapping along with the surprisingly good musical numbers, you’ll immediately be thankful for its existence and start enjoying every minute of infectious songs, mad storytelling and truly WTF moments.
Lovingly restored by Vinegar Syndrome in 2022, who must have had a real blast working on this one!
